Bánffy manor

A few kilometers from Dej, among the hills where Someșul Mare meets Someşul Mic, we find a village whose story extends until the beginning of the last millennium: SânmărghitaThe manor is located in a high area of the village and carries many testimonies of the rich noble past with which the life of this settlement is linked. It was built at the beginning of the 19th century and an inscription on one of the beams shows us the first owner as the Banffy family, with an important presence in the historical accounts of these places before 1700. Eventually, we find the manor in possession of the Bethlen family, another important nobiliary name in Transylvania, only to find, at the beginning of the twentieth century, Jeno Horthy, the brother of the Hungarian regent, who, by his marriage to Rozsa Bethlen, will make the manor of Sânmărghita a temporary residence, most likely for the hunting expeditions, he was extremely passionate about. The manor's architecture is Neoclassical, with the main façade marked by a six-columned porch, of doric inspiration, crowned by a triangular front, which gives it a noble air. The lateral façade opens through a loggia marked by eight columns - the original columns have been preserved. The generous land that surrounds the manor has 4100 sqm and includes an old walnut and fruit trees. The building is now completely renovated, the current owner undergoing a carefulness process of rehabilitation and restoration, managing to save a great part of the original elements: the stone columns, a part of the wooden beams, the wooden decorative elements from the inside and some of the ornaments of the façade, which have not yet been settled above the windows. Currently, the house is inhabited, using the ground floor and mezzanine. The floor and the attic are open spaces, fully renovated but not furnished. "I think every man is born with a mission to fulfil in life. To find this castle, to fall in love with it and to save it from extinction, I think it was part of my mission on this Earth", says the current owner, a Spanish citizen who, after living in many corners of the world, arrived at Sânmărghita where he invested time and money for the restoration of this architectural jewel in which he has been living for some years now. He only wants the future owner to appreciate the past's true value and to find the best use for it in the future. The quiet, bohemian atmosphere of the patriarchal village, with singing birds in the garden make this space an ideal place for a small hotel or a boarding house, a permanent or a holiday residence, a center for events or an elderly care one - these are only a few possible functions that can bring life to a property with great character and a rich history in a picturesque area such as this.
